On 04.03.2022 displaced third country nationals from Ukraine received protection in the European Union. While Ukrainian citizens, grantees of international protection in Ukraine, and their families receive full benefits of temporary protection under EU 2001/55/EC; Ukraine’s Migrant Communities and often their Ukrainian children do not. Instead, they were offered adequate protection under national law, which offered some but not all of these benefits. On 04.03.2025 the Federal Republic of Germany exercised its right to exclude non-Ukrainian third country nationals from protection entirely. These are the faces and stories of those affected.
